Scabiosa japonica

The pale blue pincushion like flowers are produced on thin stems in the late summer. Usually a biennial plant in its first year it will make a ground hanging rosette of lobed leaves before flowering the next year. In the wild, it can be found growing where other plants are sparse usually on very rocky and stony sites. Spreading by seed it is a good idea to pull ripe seed heads off and scatter them where you would like them to establish. Very hardy enjoying poor soil and a sunny aspect.
